Be careful what you suggest.

We live next to the fairgrounds. We look at it every day. Of course, my mind works overtime and somewhere this idea formulated in my mind sometime last winter. If it would have stayed in my mind, it would have saved me a lot of work. If it would have stayed there, the fairgrounds would not have looked this nice this year though.
Here's the idea: Put areas of the fairgrounds up for "adoption". Individuals, clubs, businesses can adopt areas of the fairgrounds in return for free advertising and a chance to win prizes. I thought, "hey I'll suggest this and I'll even adopt an area" So I suggested and then I was in charge of it. When will I learn? Obviously I haven't learned in the first 50 years of life, it's not looking good for the next fifty. Luckily I asked a couple of people to help and they have proved to be priceless! So we advertised, we begged, we pleaded and we mapped out 25 areas of the fairgrounds that needed improvement and people volunteered, well to be truthful, some volunteered and some agreed to all the hard work just to get me to shut up and leave them alone. Hey, whatever works. So I am going to share the pictures that I took tonight. Some areas are not finished yet.

To be fair here, this pond and waterfall was actually there already. It was in bad shape though and the one club really cleaned it up.

Some are still working, but what an aggressive project...building a rock wall.

And this is our area. John and I did this tonight after work. These were all orphan plants that were left over when the local greenhouse closed this year. Thank goodness for Carol's generosity, it really saved me work and money and really filled in my area. There was nothing but dirt here at 5 o'clock and now this is ready for me to water every day.

When we finished this I wanted to go around and take these pictures. There was so much congestion in the fairgrounds with campers and rides moving in so I thought of walking, but then I looked at John's mountain bike and thought, "Why not?" I seriously underestimated both the time that had passed since I rode a bike ( I missed an entire decade and had not been on my bike since I was in my 30's) and how bad my legs would shake until I made it home. Another thing off my list, the landscaping, not the bike, I might ride it again!

WOW! What a brainstorm gone right! This is so awesome Cathy, and the grounds are beautiful. So much creativity and thought went into each project. I think it's an idea many grounds could adopt!

What a great idea, Cathy! Aren't you proud of how it all turned out. I'm headed to the Butler Fair tonight...is that where I might see the fruits of your labor?

That is a great idea..... I live close enough to a fair grounds that I can see the buildings from my front porch....but I bet there wouldn't be many ambitious enough to make the improvements your people did! It looks great and that was a really good idea.

Cathy, What a good idea and how nice everything looks at the fair grounds. I am sure now you are glad that you took on the challenge, but I know what you mean about suggesting something and then being put in charge! I'm not working at Sauder on Saturday, otherwise I'd want to meet your parents. We had over 2,000 guests from Tues to Thurs. I came home last night exhausted and spent the evening on the couch! ~Ann

Cathy - the quilts are GREAT and the fairgrounds are, too! I wonder what everyone else is doing while your mind is concocting ideas! God has truly given you a GIFT, girl!

Great idea Cathy...every time I drove past the fairgrounds and saw the waterfall area, I kept thinking how it desperately needed tending...thanks for taking the initiative in spearheading the project--all of the areas look great!
