WArm up America...and a free day!

First of all, these are squares that I have been making for Warm-Up America. They have to be 7 by 9 square of whatever pattern that you want to make, knit or crochet. They are so quick and use up those little wee scraps of yarn that you have. Check out your local JoAnns or Michaels for a place to drop them off. They take them and make afghan blankets and donate them to homeless shelters, women's shelters and so on. A worthy project that uses what you have laying around and it is a great place to try new stitches and patterns. I have an entire free day today. A friend and I are making a trip to JoAnns this morning but other than that I have the entire day open. It is like looking at a blank canvas and trying to decide what you are going to paint on it. I have ideas but don't want to waste one minute of it! My canvas today is going to look like a collage, I think, a little bit of everything. I plan to catch up on all of your wonderful blogs that I have missed this week, mostly working extra hours so that I could have this day off. I want to paint a little, maybe do a few ATC'c, darn that new addiction, a little bit of cleaning and laundry and put my deck back in order from the staining (money well spent...the guy that did it was amazing, no runs, no spills, my flowers are all still intact, and it looks PERFECT AND I HAVE THE DAY OFF!). I have wool that needs cut up, a pillow top that I have started, a bunch of stuff that needs sprayed (if it quits raining) and after just one more cup of coffee, I may get to some of that.
But first, what are all my blog friends doing?

Enjoy, enjoy. I had a blank canvas yesterday, and shared it with friends on a road/shopping trip. We went to three area towns for new patterns and ideas. Prims and an Italian lunch out under colorful umbrellas in an enclosed huge tuscan inspired patio garden. We had so much fun. Before we left Kalona we had to get our fix of Amish fresh baked goods. We didn't really find a lot of new anything out there. While totally fun, as far as finding something you wanted to run home and make ... not! Well, I hope you end up loving your day. Happy 4th of July weekend.:) P

Some of you asked for this. This is literally one of the EASIEST, most appreciated projects that I have ever made. I timed myself while I made this one and it was finished in under 1/2 hour and that included refilling bobbins, taking pictures, and searching the button box for two matching buttons. They are even faster if 1.) you don't do all of the above and 2.) you make them on an assembly line. Step 1. Cut a piece of fabric for the straps 4 inches wide by 14 or so inches long. If you have a very lightweight fabric, you can double it or use press on interfacing to back it. Step 2. Cut two coordinating rectangles approximately 12 to 15 inches by 15 to 18 inches. This is very loose, you can use vary the size of them. Pin those together on the bottom and halfway up the sides. Step 3. Press the 4 inch rectangle in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and sew around raw edges, then zig - zag the edge. If the fabric frays really bad, you can go over it again. Step 4

Sharpie Markers and Alcohol = Really Quick Art

What a fun, creative process!  Grab all those sharpies that are hidden in your desk drawer. Find that bottle of rubbing alcohol. (Vodka or hand  sanitize might work, you can always experiment) Dig out a canvas,  or go buy some,  nothing like having some blank canvases hanging around.  Draw some wild and crazy lines. Fast and not a lot of planning work best.  Hit it all with some alcohol.  Allow it to move and blend.  I use a brush for the alcohol,  You could use a spray bottle or eye dropper,  I just want a little more control on mine.  And re-outline with a black sharpie!   That's it!  Fast Art!  I will be teaching this next Friday along with two other  fun projects in Mayville, New York.  For more info go to: https://www.facebook.com/ARTRetreatatthelake

Steps to a snowman face, Part 1.

Sketch in the face. Use chalk (I like welder's chalk) and don't be afraid. After all, it is a snowman and they are all different so you can't get it wrong. Paint the face white or light gray or light blue. Just get a base on it and let that dry. Then, and you have to work sort of fast to do this part, lay in three values of color. This one is a medium country blue, a lighter blue and white. I also frequently use Milk Chocolate, Cocoa and an Off-White. Experiment, you might find a better combination. Then Blend, Blend, Blend. I use the largest brush that I can fit in the area. Keep a paper towel folded in your hand and keep wiping your brush. Do not dip it back into the water at this point. Blend between the dark and medium, wipe your brush, blend between the medium and light. Nice soft blend between the values. And then, wipe your brush again and pick up white and drybrush more white in the lightest area. I like to drybrush a little white in the dark areas also. I t
