And now for the quiet

On Friday morning, the day that we celebrated Christmas, I finally finished these stocking that I had been working on. They were a bit of a challenge for me, and my sewing machine broke in the middle of them and had to be torn apart. No one could have been more surprised than me when I put it back together (the third time) and it worked. We had a fun, crazy Christmas full of lots of noise and too much food. I love having all the kids together at once. For as close as we all live, it does not happen that often.

I look forward to January and February more and more each year. The shop is slower and there is more time to stay at home and nest/rest. I have tons of projects that I want to do and a few that I need to do. Mostly I like the rest and break from the busy time of the year which for us is March through December.
This is a pic of my daughters and stepdaughters on Christmas Day in a break from being a rock band. What fun that game was for them...I just don't have the coordination for it.
I have so much to be thankful for this year and I count my blessings daily for all the big ones, but I would like to also list some little ones that happened the last few weeks.
1. A good haircut, thanks Bryan, I am sure that you are back in the warmth and sunshine if you are reading this! Wish you could come back in six weeks!
2. A 25 cent sale at Goodwill two days before Christmas when I ran in before dinner with friends and came out with four bags of wool! What a find!
3. A gift of warm knee socks that I have been looking everywhere for...thanks Tina!
4. Finding the "green" scarves of recycled plastic bottle yarn from Natalie over at Tins and Treasures. The girls loved them! Thanks Natalie, I love mine also.
Tomorrow is John's 50th birthday. Now we are both "in our 50's" and I am so glad that he is now getting the AARP envelopes also. He can't make fun of me any more. He wants to spend it at home watching the Steelers, of course.

Your stockings turned out very cute...that is so frustrating when the machine won't cooperate. Great picture of your girls. It is so fun to have them in the house again.
I'm glad the girls like the scarves. I'm knitting one with the blue and purple together now.

Some of you asked for this. This is literally one of the EASIEST, most appreciated projects that I have ever made. I timed myself while I made this one and it was finished in under 1/2 hour and that included refilling bobbins, taking pictures, and searching the button box for two matching buttons. They are even faster if 1.) you don't do all of the above and 2.) you make them on an assembly line. Step 1. Cut a piece of fabric for the straps 4 inches wide by 14 or so inches long. If you have a very lightweight fabric, you can double it or use press on interfacing to back it. Step 2. Cut two coordinating rectangles approximately 12 to 15 inches by 15 to 18 inches. This is very loose, you can use vary the size of them. Pin those together on the bottom and halfway up the sides. Step 3. Press the 4 inch rectangle in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and sew around raw edges, then zig - zag the edge. If the fabric frays really bad, you can go over it again. Step 4

Sharpie Markers and Alcohol = Really Quick Art

What a fun, creative process!  Grab all those sharpies that are hidden in your desk drawer. Find that bottle of rubbing alcohol. (Vodka or hand  sanitize might work, you can always experiment) Dig out a canvas,  or go buy some,  nothing like having some blank canvases hanging around.  Draw some wild and crazy lines. Fast and not a lot of planning work best.  Hit it all with some alcohol.  Allow it to move and blend.  I use a brush for the alcohol,  You could use a spray bottle or eye dropper,  I just want a little more control on mine.  And re-outline with a black sharpie!   That's it!  Fast Art!  I will be teaching this next Friday along with two other  fun projects in Mayville, New York.  For more info go to: https://www.facebook.com/ARTRetreatatthelake

Steps to a snowman face, Part 1.

Sketch in the face. Use chalk (I like welder's chalk) and don't be afraid. After all, it is a snowman and they are all different so you can't get it wrong. Paint the face white or light gray or light blue. Just get a base on it and let that dry. Then, and you have to work sort of fast to do this part, lay in three values of color. This one is a medium country blue, a lighter blue and white. I also frequently use Milk Chocolate, Cocoa and an Off-White. Experiment, you might find a better combination. Then Blend, Blend, Blend. I use the largest brush that I can fit in the area. Keep a paper towel folded in your hand and keep wiping your brush. Do not dip it back into the water at this point. Blend between the dark and medium, wipe your brush, blend between the medium and light. Nice soft blend between the values. And then, wipe your brush again and pick up white and drybrush more white in the lightest area. I like to drybrush a little white in the dark areas also. I t
